But most importantly, our father, George E. Knight, was a Lance Corporal in WWII, and part of the group that you so eloquently chronicle in your website. I personally knew Sgt Huff when I was stationed in Hawaii in the early '60's. I would sure like to be able to find out more specifics about my father and his specific unit's activities if you can give me some leads.

Comments about the web site: Ma'am I am the enlisted aide to Major General Arnold Fields, USMC. Major General Fields is the keynote speaker for the MPMA Convention in North Carolina on 15 July 2000. I ran across this page while searching for information. This is an awesome site - you should be very proud. Not only of this site, but of the men whom it immortalizes. I do however, have a question - various sites have made mention of both Gen. Stanley and Bolden, two current Active Duty (African-American) Generals, however none of Major General Fields. I was just wondering why that would be.

Looking at their photos and reading their "bios" really gives one a feeling of pride in the accomplishments of the first Black Marines. I can only suggest that you expand your site to include the stories of even more Montford Point men. It's a shame that they aren't better known.

Comments about the web site: One of the last Buffalo Soldiers. The Forgotten War 50th year anniversary) Some go as far as to say that such stories put wrong ideas in the heads of our younger generation, when in reality it leaves them with a sense of pride, and knowledge of their history. Our history... On March 27, 1950, I turned seventeen years old, and immediately set to work persuading my mother to give the consent required for me to join the military. Ten days later—April 6—I enlisted in the United States Army. In August of that year I was sent to Fort Belvoir, Virginia, for demolition training. During that training, I learned of the so-called police action taking place in Korea. Like many other young soldiers, I volunteered for combat duty there. My worst fear was that the action would be over by the time I arrived in Korea, so I cut short an eight-day leave to be sure I wouldn't miss anything. I was shipped to Korea as a rifleman to the army's last all-black unit, the 24th Regiment Combat Team (RCT), originally known as the Buffalo Soldiers. Many consider the 24th RCT one of the most outstanding combat units in the Korean War. In the 1st 14 months of fighting, the 24th RCT was among those with the longest unrelieved infantry service. My book WHAT’S A COMMIE EVER DONE TO BLACK PEOPLE? details the psychological effect of the Korean War on a 17-year-old kid. It also tells the story of a black man’s fight in a racist United States army. We black soldiers soon realized the bitter irony of our situation—supposedly fighting to protect the freedom of American society, even as that freedom was denied us Black-American in our own country. My experience was a rude awakening to the realities, not only of life and death, but of war. For book information & war-photos, see, Buffalo-Soldier’s @ website. For the 3years, 50th anniversary commemoration schedule, visit>> http://korea50.army.mil/ Sincerely Curtis J, Morrow (Freedom is never Free) The Author

Comments about the web site: Absolutely an appropriate and fitting history for the Marines of Montford Point (Camp Johnson). I went to school there unknowing of the unique history of the place, and have returned once. I have an interest in all things USMC historical, and believe that within the Corps right now, the significance of Montford Point and "Hashmark" Johnson is overlooked - even by young black Marines. I plan on incorporating some of what you have here into a display I'm going to make for next year's Black History Month; with your permission, of course.

Comments about the web site: Girllll, this is one of the best personal sites I've seen. Your graphics are just simple beautiful. You have a lovely way with words. The color scheme is easy on my eyes and your site is easy to navigate. I too have the poem Bed of Live. I first came across it about 25 years, and take it out and read it often. Your site reveals the personality of a truely happy person that is satisfied with her life. Your site is very inspiring. Thanks for sharing

I have heard so many stories of the struggle to fight for a country who doesn't even except you as equal. My grandfather passed away right after Thanksgiving last year and I miss him deeply. I am currently doing a research paper, and I believe that he would honored if I did my research on segregation in the military. This is an excellent site! I am so proud to be a direct decendant of a spectacular group of men and women. Amina J. Johnson

I went to the basic automotive mechanics course at Camp Johnson in the summer of 1977. I was very impresses with the story of Sergeant Major Gilbert H. Johnson. I still am. My Platoon, Company, and Battalion held at least 4 celebrations, history, discussion, and lunches during the month of February. I attended all. I have served proudly along side African-Americans since 1977 and continue to serve proudly today. Your website is outstanding. A living honor to commemorate those Marines who helped shape todays Marine Corps. We owe them a dept we can never pay. With deep admiration... CWO-5 KEVIN P DELUCA

Comments about the web site: Great Site. Glad to see Montford Point Marines getting recognition they deserve. A Marine "Ugly Angel" sent me an E-Mail about 2 Montford Point, Iwo Jima, Marines that were written about in a news article. I know a few Montford Point Marines from MA, where I'm originally from. One of the most prominent black Marines that I served with, and think of often, was SgtMaj Fred Douglas, who was killed in the Beirut Bombing. A bit of trivia... At the time I read the article, the youngest known American to be killed in combat, in the Vietnam War, was a 15 year old black Marine, Dan Bullock, I think, from Chicago? I took interest in the article at the time, because I was crewing a Huey gunship over his position the night he was killed in 1969. He was walking post on a ridge overlooking First MarDiv HQ. Keep up the good work for all of the Montford Point Marines! Semper Fi!

I served 20 years and attended Motor Transport Mechanics school at camp johnson in Sept of 1977, and returned in 1990 to attend Motor transport Chiefs course. I did know that the camp was name for SgtMaj Johnson and that montford point had been the boot camp for black Marines prior to my life. Thanks for the wonderful information filled site. I too am the daughter of a Montford Point Marine. My father, O'ther Lee Givens was one of the original 200. One the first Black men allowed to enlist in 1942. He was one of the past National Presidents of the Montford Point Marine Association, and a life member. I lost him in march of 2000. Presidenet Clinton sent a certificate honoring his contribution to society. Since his departure, I have vowed to keep his memory and the memory of the MPM's & the MPMA alive!! It's refreshing to know that there are others out there with similar interest. God Bless you my Sister!!! Keep up the good work!!!!

Comments about the web site: I am very pleased with your website. I am a retired US Marine attending Public History graduate school at UNC-Wilmington NC. I live in Jacksonville NC. I do not know your current residence but I am currently conducting an Oral History project and extensive research for my Masters Degree that deals with the first segregated USO of Jacksonville NC (Newberry Street) It was referred to as the USO-Extensionand I am also researching the Jacksonville USO. I am seeking comments, photograhs, and interviews of the USO club's formation and activities of its early years; 1944-1959. I located some official USO files dealing with the daily operations but I seek some personal comments from people who visited the Newberry Street USO from 1944-1951. I am also seeking any publication dealing with Black servicemen's USO of WWII. I can not seem to locate any text that is dedicated to this aspect of WWII history. Any assistance is welcomed. Comments I receive will be used in my research project. I have been in continuous contact with the new Montford Point Marine Museum and they are attempting to assist. I have also been in contact with numerous archives and historians who seem to have no specific information to Black servicemen's USO Club. Thank you for your assistance. I hope you and your readers can assist my adventure. Again, you have a wonderful websit. With respect, Jack Robinson 387 Rhodestown Road Jacksonville NC 28540 jackrobinson@hotmail.com

Comments about the web site: Thanks for sharing this tribute. I was seeking info about blacks in the military because I am producing a corporate video about patriotism. I am white and so are my team members. I am featuring a fictional black war vet and his grandaughter. Sadly, the project's client is trying to shoot down using a black man for the video. He stated, in a whisper of course, "it's not right to feature a black man for this peice ... blacks didn't really do anything in the service except dig ditches." How sad that he is so ignorant! So, here I am happily spending my Sunday collecting information to educate this man and collect evidence to support my desire to feature a black military man. Thanks again for sharing your story. You must be very proud of your father. As a white person and human being I am grateful for his contribution to our nation!

On retrospect, though i knew little of the circumstances at the time, the corps i was exposed to was filled with powerful black Marines (dark green). They have greatly affected my life, from my senior drill instructor(Ssgt Campell), to my football coach (1st sgt Thompson), to Col Pete. Thankyou, and semperfi

Comments about the web site: I was commissioned in August of 1989. I joined the Corps because of an attraction to all things military, and like many of Monford Point Marines wanted to test mtself with the best. However,at the time I had no idea of the precedent and history that made my commissioning possible. To me the Marine Corps was John Wayne and the Sands of Iwo Jima. Although I served honorable and well, I believe that this history would have given me a greater appreciation for what I was doing at the time. Your site and others like it will open up a chapter of American history that has for the most part been hiiden to our young men and women. That they, as African-Americans are possessed of a rich military history that dates back to before the revolutionary war and which gives meaning to our participation in the armed forces of our country. Something that has usually only be reserved for young whites. Sharing this is an important gift to us all. THANK YOU!
